Even with the neon lighting switched off, Tokyo is still the colour capital of the world. Akihabara stretching beyond the limits of many mid level cities is the largest electronics market you may possibly see. Filled with the latest Japanese gadgetry, the area is candy shop for grown up geeks, of which I’m one.

Electric Avenue

Akihabara is located in east Tokyo, within the Kanto region of Japan. Akihabara is the world’s largest area dedicated to all things electronical and is situated near Ueno, Asakusa and Ryogoku.

Akihabara is an electronic enthusiasts paradise. The area is quite literally devoted to the sale of all imaginable electronic gadgets. The newest models are first realised in this colourful mecca, and prices are extremely competitive.

Its hard to get past the volume of shops, but Akihabara is also famous for a few other things. Within Japan there is a renouned sub-culture known as “otaku”, which translated into english means “computer geek”. Japanese “otaku” are fond of their manga, comic toys and also the odd visit to one of the many ‘maid cafes’, where they can be treated like royalty by japanese women dressed as french maids! Along with some gadget shopping, why not take a look a one of the querks that make Japan so special.

Asahi Starck Building

The Asahi Beer building in Asakusa is one of the stranger buildings in Tokyo. Designed by french designer Philippe Starck, one of my favourite designers. The building grows out of the ground at obscure angles, topped with a golden head, or “golden turd” as some locals have named it. A perfect contrast to the more tradditional buildings that are found in Tokyo’s down town, Asakusa.

Senso Ji

Senso ji is Tokyo’s oldest Buddist temple, situated in down town Asakusa. The temple doesn’t have the attractive gardens which you find at other Japanese temples, but the approach through the old market street gives a great impression of what the area may have looked like many years ago. Unlike other areas of Tokyo, you can get a true idea of a pre war Tokyo.
