When visiting shinto shrines in Japan its common to see people tying paper or wooden blocks to trees. Each contains a message or wish for the gods. In the past images would be of horses, more recently thats been changed to an “anything goes” approach, hence the big buddha.

Ushiku is located in the Ibaraki prefecture which is in the Kanto region of Japan. Ushiku is a very small quiet Japanese village, there is a large shopping mall next to the station. But beyond this there is not much more.

Travelling into the countryside surrounding Ushiku you will find the worlds largest free standing Buddha. Standing 120m above the ground, the statue was completed in 1995. An elevator takes visitors up to 85m off the ground, where an observation floor allows you to observe the world through buddhas very own eyes!
