Abiko is located in North Chiba, on the edge of Tokyo within the Kanto region of Japan. Abiko is a quite, peaceful Japanese town. Abiko is the first stop on the chiyoda line which travels the length of chiba to Yoyogi park in west Tokyo.
Abiko is not the obvious place to visit, but is a good place to sample ‘the real Japan’. Many of the faces that pass through Tokyo’s streets will retire to towns such as this, and so Abiko gives a perfect example of Japanese life and culture.
One of the largest lakes near Tokyo can be found in Abiko, Teganuma Lake is often viewed upon negatively due to its past reputation as one of Japans most poluted lakes, but in reality it is a very nice lake to stroll around. During the summer people from the nearby region visit Abiko and Teganuma for the regions ‘hanami’ fireworks display.

Cherry blossom, or ‘Sakura’ as it is known in Japan, is a national institution. Each spring the coming of the blossom will fill hours of television as its descent from the top of Hokkaido down to the tip of Kyushu is analysied by experts.

Its easy to get lost in a Japanese neighbourhood. There isn’t the structure and organisation that im used to from England. Roads are very narrow and weave around every new building as if they were just an after thought.

I’d only been living in Japan for a short period when this photography was taken. Hence me dropping practically everthing from my chopsticks all over the table and floor. Unfortunately this slippery ika ended up in the ashtray, forming what was to be a great photo.

Teganuma is said to be one of the dirtiest lakes in Japan. I was always reminded of this. having said that, I was never interested in drinking or swimming in the water. I was quite happy to just ride my bike around it enjoying the view.

This was the view from my balcony while I was living in Japan in 2003 -2004. The skies in Japan are one of the things which hit me the most. Quite often there wouldn’t be a single cloud in the sky, it would just be a blanket of brilliant blue.
